What is a Rotary Phase Converter?

A Rotary phase converter is a device consisting of a three phase motor and controls that converts nominal single phase power into useable three phase power.  This allows you to run three phase equipment from single phase power.

Most areas of the US does not have three phase utility power available, especially rural and residential areas.  And since most industrial equipment is only available in three phase form a big problem exist.

Thankfully there is an economical solution.  The rotary phase converter.  There are many types of phase converters and even more types of designs.

Elimia only offers Rotary Phase Converters.

Static phase converters are the least expensive type of three phase converters.  Static converters basically used a capacitor or capacitor bank to generate the third phase from single phase power.  This method of conversion produces an out of balance condition and wild voltage fluctuations.  Although a lot of different types equipment can be ran from static converters it can be detrimental and problematic to your three phase equipment.

Variable Frequency drives solid state devices that convert single phase input voltage to DC then generate clean three phase AC.  Not all VFD's can convert single phase to three phase but most can.  However, VFD's should be rated approximately twice the equipments rated power.  VFD's are an excellent way to generate three phase but they are very expensive and usually not economically servicable.

Rotary phase converters offer the best results for the money.

Are Rotary Converters Designed and Built the Same?

No, not at all.  Basically, a rotary phase converter uses capacitors to start and run a three phase motor from single phase power.  How this is done varies greatly.  At Elimia we use a unique electronic starting system.  This systems ensures that the starting capacitors are only powered just enough to get the motor running.  Once achieve the start capacitors are disconnected from the system.  Our system's electronics control the starting, there is no button to hold down and release once your motor is up and running.  It is all automatic.  All of our converters come with electronic starting.

Another very important part of any rotary phase converter is the run capacitors and voltage balancing.  Sizing the system's run capacitors right produces a well balanced converter that is capable of running nearly 100% of all three phase equipment within the converters rating.  At Elimia we are so proud of our balancing techniques that we show them on our website.  Look at the pictures link or click here.  Our converters will run your equipment problem free.

Finally motors.  Elimia only uses heavy duty cast iron motors. Small motors are sealed totally enclosed and fan cooled (TEFC).  Totally enclosed motors are surface cooled, the entire motor is sealed which prevents dirt, dust and grime from getting in.  For larger converters, 10HP +, open dripproof motors are used (ODP).  ODP motor pull in air from the motor ends and discharge air out the sides.  Additional features of our motors include high service factor ratings (1.15) and heavy duty insulation class F.  Most of our converters use Reliance Duty Master brand motors.  A well known brand with a proven history of reliability.  Reliance is a division of Baldor.  Please see wesite for more information on Reliance Motors.
